October Sky

October was a busy, busy month. It started with ACL weekend, followed by my birthday the next weekend, a trip to Dallas for a little game against OU the weekend after that, a night out with work Derrick, Courtney and Xavier on my one free weekend, the So You Think You Can Dance tour, and concluded with a trip to Vegas for Julia's bachelorette party/Halloween.

The month was a blur, so I'll try to recap the best I can - with some pics, of course. Oh, except for Vegas - that will be an update all on its own.

ACL
My brothers and sister-in-law were all in town for ACL. We headed out there early evening on Friday. The weather was absolutely perfect. Zilker was amazing; the lush green grass was perfect. We set up our chairs and flag pole at the main Livestrong stage. I was hoping to get there in time to hear some of Phoenix and Coheed and Cambria, but we only caught the tale end of C&C. I listened to a bit of Thievery Corporation and then tried to fight my way across the park to the AMD stage to hear some of John Legend, but that didn't work out. Next stop was the Xbox stage to hear some of Them Crooked Vultures. And then back to Livestrong for the Kings of Leon performance. I was a bit bored by their performance. I heard that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs put on a freakin' fabulous show back on the AMD stage, so I wish I had seen some of that show. Ralph got a bit tipsy (aka drunk) and passed out in the car while we ate at Plucker's. Then he passed out in my car the whole way back to my apartment. Ha!

On Saturday, Ralph and I drove around everywhere looking for rain ponchos - yeah, no luck. In the end, Arnold found some so he stocked up. We got to Zilker, set up show at the Livestrong stage, and then looked up and saw the clouds coming. Not a second after we threw on our ponchos did the rain coming pouring down...and down...and down. And then it stopped, so we took off our ponchos, and then the rain came again. It was a continuous stream throughout the day, which made it slightly miserable. I can't remember everything from Saturday, but I did dance to some Citizen Cope at the Livestrong stage, saw a brief bit of the Zac Brown Band (though I absolutely despise the "a little bit of chicken fried, cold beer on a Friday night" song) while I waited for the Scabs (I heart Bob Schneider) on the Austin Ventures stage, a little sampling of Mos Def on the AMD stage, and then Dave Matthews Band on the Livestrong stage. I also saw some of Ghostland Observatory on the AMD stage...and truth be told, I should have stayed at AMD. DMB was good, but I was having a great time at AMD during Ghostland.

On Sunday, Ralph, Arnold and Paige headed back to Dallas/Oklahoma, so I met up with Rebecca and Felicia. It was so disgustingly muddy...and hot...and humid...and muddy!! We saw the Toadies, walked around for awhile, and then got ready for the dance party that was GirlTalk. Amazingness! It was a series of mash-ups, and we were all dancing around in the nasty dillo dirt. Then everyone headed over to the Livestrong stage to see Pearl Jam. We kinda hung out in the back and sat back in our chairs and just listened.

Minus the rain and mud, ACL was fun times.

My Birthday
This was the first year in a long time that my birthday didn't fall the same week/weekend as the OU game. I was so used to celebrating my birthday in Dallas, with gifts in the form of corny dogs, funnel cakes, drinks, etc. I decided to stretch my festivities out as much as possible. My actual birthday fell on Thursday. My mom had Tiff's Treats delivered to my work - delicious snickerdoodle, chocolate chip, and peanut butter chocolate chip...YUM! Work people treated me to lunch at EZ's, and Courtney decorated my office and gave me a cute card and peanut butter M&Ms...my fav! I met up with BJ for happy hour at Chuy's, and then we were joined by Terence, Caitlin, Denise, Derek, Derek R., Jacob, Dylan, Christina, Taylor and Heather for dinner. I had a work event Friday night, but I hung out with Kash, Rob and Monica at Trudy's and then at Rob's house after the event. Saturday my mom, Arnold, Paige and I went to Threadgill's for my birthday lunch, and my mom brought me a delish cake. I haven't had a birthday cake in years. I had the game off, so I got to tailgate with my friends before the CU game. Following the game, a few of us went down to Union Park to continue my birthday celebration. I had a blast - from what I can remember. Jacob bought me the dreaded jager (I have a bad history with jager); after that, I was dunskies. Courtney had to get me from the bathroom (where I made a bit of a mess) and dropped me off at home. The entire Sunday was spent with a birthday hangover. But it was good times. Next year's birthday falls on ACL, so that should be interesting.

Thanks to everyone for making this year's birthday one to remember - well, I guess for everyone but me. It sounds like I had a good time!

Oh, and I recently saw the pics that work Derrick posted from that night, and it's sad that I don't remember taking a single one.

OU Weekend
I'm not going to lie - I love OU Weekend! I love almost everything about it. Some of the most fun and memorable weekends I had in college happened in Dallas during those 2 days.

I headed up to Dallas on Friday afternoon and spent a few hours with Julia. After dinner, a few people from APO were going to hit up Across the Street Bar. It wasn't exactly where I wanted to go, but I don't know Dallas very well and that's where everyone I knew was going to be. So I went along with it. That might have been a mistake. I felt really old watching the college kids slop pitchers of beer all over the place. The bartenders were ridiculously rude and overall douchebags - which was to be expected seeing how it's Dallas.

On Saturday morning, BJ came to pick me and Derek up and we went to the DART station in Garland. We sat on an unmoving DART train for about 30-45 minutes, at which time I started losing patience. As we got closer to downtown, our plan was to take the DART to the last stop in downtown, then jump off and grab the DART going back the other way so that we were one of the first ones on...that way we could avoid the clusterfuck that was Mockingbird Station. THAT WAS THE PLAN. The stop after Mockingbird Station (can't remember), BJ and Derek decided that there weren't that many people waiting, so we should get off. BIG MISTAKE! The next train that passed us was completely full. So we jumped the track to catch the DART going further. Yeah, people got wise and started to do our original plan, so there was no way of getting on that train. So we jumped the track again...that train was full...jumped the track again...full...jumped the track again...an OU guy stuck his head out and told me there was room, so we rushed to the doors. We were standing in the doorway, and right as the doors closed, some guy decided he was going to squeeze in. At the next stop, some people decided they were tired of waiting, so they squeezed themselves in, making it entirely too uncomfortable. And then we stopped on the tracks...and we waited...and waited...and waited...moved a bit...stopped...waited...waited...3 F'ING HOURS LATER arrived at the Cotton Bowl. I'm not one to get claustrophobic, but I started sweating a bit and had a mini-anxiety attack. I was looking all over for a cab so that I could get off the DART and get to the game. But none seemed to be around.

Once we got to the game, it was freakin' hot!! Half my body was red by the end of it...lovely. The game was sloppy, but we won. After the game, Derek and I began our tour of fried goodness: corny dog (I may have had two throughout the day), fried snickers, fried oreos, funnel cake, fried peaches and cream...there might have been something else.

I was exhausted after that, so I didn't venture out that night. On Sunday, I woke up feeling sick, so I left Dallas pretty early. And then for a week and a half after returning home, I had my first bout of strep throat. Lovely.

Pete's Dueling Pianos Bar
Derrick and Xavier were going to venture to Pete's for the first time, so Courtney and I decided to go with them. I've been before, and it's always a good time. We had a fabulous time up on the balcony. There was a bachelorette party in the bar, and the bachelorette got her daughter up on stage. The piano players did "Joy to the World"...which, if you have ever been to Pete's, can get a little raunchy. The bachelorette was not having that and caused a bit of a scene getting her daughter off the stage. It was just a fun night out, singing loudly to some good songs. Oh, and a skeevy married dude hit on me while the others stood there laughing at the awkward turtle situation.

So You Think You Can Dance Tour
I absolutely love this show...I wish with all my heart that I could dance...and sing...and be on Broadway. Le sigh...

I'll keep this short and move on to pictures.

October was seriously the best month I've had in a while. I think I may still be recovering!
