Mat(t) Gets Me Through the Day

Sharing an office at work can present a problem when it comes to listening to music. I enjoy having music playing in the background, but since I started working at my current job 3 1/2 years ago, I've shared an office with someone - and for the last 10 months, with two someones. Nobody at work ever had on headphones, so I wasn't sure what the policy was. Plus, I didn't want my officemate(s) to think I was mad or ignoring him/them.

But there are times that I want nothing more than to walk into my office, put on my headphones, and just be lost in my own world. Some days I just don't feel like talking - I know, that's surprising coming from Ms. Talks-a-lot. And I don't necessarily mean talking to my officemates; I also mean I don't feel like talking to the other Ms. Talks-a-lot coworkers that stop by my office.

For awhile, I only started putting on my headphone when I got busy. It was a way for me to get into a zone and tune everything else out. If I wasn't too busy, then the headphones would stay off.

But now... totally different story! I walk into my office in the morning and aren't taken off until 5:00 - or, of course, for bathroom breaks, lunch, meetings, when a person I actually want to talk to comes into the office, etc.

My workday Pandora station of choice is Mat Kearney/Matt Nathanson (they basically play the same music, so they are interchangeable). The soothing - or some people think depressing; I do not - music that is played on these stations puts me at ease while working and keeps me from going Corpus Kristy on someone.

Note: I tried to find actual music videos, but a couple of them I couldn't. And the last Mat K song is a Lost video montage because there is no official video and all the concert videos were horrible sounding/too many people singing to hear him actually singing. So I apologize to the non-Lost fans.

Mat Kearney
I started downloading his music in 2009 after hearing one of his songs on The Vampire Diaries. Once I started downloading some songs, I realized I had previously heard other songs on episodes of One Tree Hill and Grey's Anatomy.

"Breathe In Breathe Out"

"Closer to Love"

"Nothing Left to Lose"

"Where We Gonna Go From Here?"

Once again, an episode of The Vampire Diaries led to an influx of itunes downloads.

"All We Are"

"Come On Get Higher"

"Curve of the Earth"

"Sooner Surrender"

  2. haha, yeah noise would bother me. There are only a couple of people who have their own office and just keep the music really low. But everyone else wears headphones. Mine are now permanently attached; except when I stupidly took them off yesterday for a few minutes.
